I choose the first stroke, and, from there, I let go. I make paintings of individual lines that are layered and intersected, creating an intertwined ecosystem on the panel. I began this practice in response to my conceptual work; I became thirsty for creating something that celebrated a stroke for the stroke, a color for the color, texture for the texture. I did not want to think what these paintings should say, but allow the elements of the painting to speak for themselves. I achieved this practice by becoming deeply intimate with the language of these lines and connecting to a higher power. A mix of trust, confidence, composition, and faith reveal to me where each next line is meant to be laid down. These are not single grids, but each line is its own character, with its own disposition and rightful place within the paintings. As the lines coexist, they begin to feel more like a cohesive ecosystem. As the lines layer, they begin to represent time passed from the first stroke to the last. In this way, they become a ledger and surface of reflection of that time. These paintings are not narrative, not about any one thing, but a space to lose thought and be open to the serendipity of where they take you.
